The oldest public and the first national library in Russia was established in 1795 by Catherine the Great. The National Library of Russia is located in a purpose-built complex of buildings in the historic center of St. Petersburg. Library as architectural ensemble, along with the Hermitage and the Russian Museum, is one of the key symbols of national culture. National Library of Russia is a modern information institute which saves the cultural and historical traditions.
Meeting of representatives of libraries, science conferences and other events are held at the library regularly.
